IELTS Writing: How to Master IELTS Writing - 1
The IELTS Writing test assesses your ability to communicate your ideas clearly in English. Here, you have to communicate in writing i.e. in the form of an essay. To master this module, you must know the basic test structure, and devise a strategy to accomplish the tasks in given time.
As a reminder, the writing module includes two tasks (Task 1 and Task -2), which you have to complete in one hour. Task – 1 is based completely on the given graphic or tabular or pictorial information, and you must write a descriptive report on the information provided in not less than 150 words. You are advised to spend 20 minutes on this task.
Task-1 will be relatively easy as you will have nothing difficult or new to think about. You just need to present the given information in your own words. For this, you need not use great diction nor complex sentences. You can write in simple English with simple sentences. This will minimize you errors and maximize you accuracy and efficacy. Take care that your writing covers the entire information provided to you.
Further, to make your Writing Task-1 easier, simply learn all the specific writing structures pertaining to each genre of Task 1. As a matter of fact, in the IELTS Writing Task – 1, you will just need to apply those structures with the given information and suitable verb tenses. Hence read as many sample essays as possible and take note of good sample structures so as to have a good exposure to a wider range of sample structures of IELTS Writing Task – 1.
Time is a very important factor. Always keep an eye on your watch. You have to monitor your progress carefully. When attempting IELTS Writing Task – 1, remember that you have a greater task ahead and you must ensure that you leave sufficient time to accomplish it efficiently. For instance, in IELTS Writing Task – 1, if you had already spent 18 minutes of time and you are still writing the body of the essay, finish it abruptly. Start a new paragraph i.e. conclusion and conclude your essay. Take care that you do not spend even a single second on Task – 1 after 20 minutes.
Finally, adhere to the basic principles of essay writing. Start you essay with a good introduction, followed by body and then a good conclusion.
